Basic gist of the Folklore Archives was created in 1932 on the basic of the Georgian State Museum. The Archives joined the correspondent department of the Institute of Literature, History and Art on the base of which Shota Rustaveli Institute of the Georgian Literature was established.

 

The founder and the first head of Archives was a famous Georgian scientist Vakhtang Kotetishvili (1892 - 1938).

 

Main activities of the Folklore Archives are:

  • Filed research of the Cultural heritage;

  • Making accessible Archives Materials;

  • Research and Publication of the texts;

  • Teach to work with the documents;

  • Popularization of Folklore.

Nowdays 105 810 documents are registered in the Archives - large and small texts.

 

The Archives materials are classified according to their origin or registering dates, such as:

  1. Petre Umikashvili Collection (6 028 texts) dated 1870-80;

  2. So called Early Fund based  on the scientific expedition materials of 1930-1959 of the folklore department of the Georgian State Museum;

  3. Materials collected during the scientific expedition since 1960 (59 087 texts), so called New Fund;

  4. Materials collected during fieldwork in 1930-1970 (13 737 texts) so called Varlam Matsaberidze Fund.

As a background is used an autography of Ilia Chavchavadze. Handwriting is kept in the Folklore Archives, Petre Umikashvili Collection.
